Kazakhstan leads Central Asia in backing UNGA resolution for Israel to leave Syrian Golan Heights

ASTANA: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) has passed a resolution A/78/L.10 urging Israel to end its occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights. The document, which was supported by 91 countries including Kazakhstan, was broadcasted by the UN media.

The 78th UNGA session saw the voting on a resolution that reaffirms the illegality of Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights. The resolution was backed by all Central Asian states, namely Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and the Kyrgyz Republic, as well as Brazil, China, India, Russia and Saudi Arabia.

However, eight countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel, and Canada, opposed the resolution. The rest of the 62 states chose to abstain.

The resolution, which consists of eight paragraphs, “declares that Israel has failed so far to comply with Security Council resolution 497 (1981).
