Tajikistan: Food assistance reaches 1.5 million

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan- In response to the escalating need for food supplies among families in Tajikistan, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has earmarked $7 million for the United Nations World Food Program (UNWFP). This funding is intended to address the needs of the most vulnerable sectors of the population and bolster the local government’s ability to mitigate the impact of ongoing price hikes.

Why Are Food Prices Growing in Tajikistan? - CABAR.asia

Currently, the UNWFP ensures access to nutritious food for over 120,000 individuals across 24,000 households in Tajikistan. However, the Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO)/WFP Crop and Food Security Assessment Mission (CFSAM) estimated that approximately 1.56 million citizens faced hunger in 2023.

Since then, the situation has improved. The rate of acute food insecurity among the population has decreased from 20 percent to 16 percent. Despite these positive changes, WFP monitors remain vigilant, closely observing household food security and market conditions. They stand ready to secure additional funds if necessary to continue providing food aid to families.
