{"id":11384,"date":"2024-03-14T13:44:36","date_gmt":"2024-03-14T13:44:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/londonpost.news\/?p=11384"},"modified":"2024-03-14T13:52:25","modified_gmt":"2024-03-14T13:52:25","slug":"uk-to-buy-14-new-chinooks-as-defence-secretary-advocates-for-military-spending-boost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brusselsindependent.com\/be\/analysis\/defense\/uk-to-buy-14-new-chinooks-as-defence-secretary-advocates-for-military-spending-boost\/2024\/03\/14\/admin1\/","title":{"rendered":"UK to buy 14 new Chinooks as Defence Secretary advocates for military spending boost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON &#8211; The UK will get 14 new Chinook helicopters, the Ministry of\u00a0Defence\u00a0(MoD) announced as the Defence Secretary called for military spending to be increased to 3% of\u00a0GDP\u00a0in a debate about the funding of Britain\u2019s armed forces.<\/p>\n<p>Britain negotiated the price down by \u00a3300 million for the fleet of US-made heavy-lift helicopters, which have double the range of a standard Chinook and can carry 10,000 kg of cargo.<\/p>\n<p>Grant Shapps announced the commitment to proceed with the contract, reversing a decision by his predecessor\u00a0Ben Wallace\u00a0to scrap the deal in a diplomatic spat over the \u00a32.3 billion price tag \u2013 \u00a3500 million more than initial estimates.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.planespotters.net\/18934\/za680-royal-air-force-boeing-ch-47-chinook_PlanespottersNet_875655_39376da908_o.jpg\" alt=\"ZA680 Royal Air Force Boeing CH-47 Chinook Photo by Peter Tolnai | ID ...\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mr Shapps said: \u201cProcuring these Chinook helicopters will mark a significant milestone in our efforts to modernise and enhance the agility of the UK armed forces, cementing our ability to respond at pace to situations and threats across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Chinook is one of our most iconic aircraft, having been operated in every major conflict since the Falklands War. Delivering on this deal not only enhances our capability, but will boost UK industry and skills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Cabinet minister, on a visit to Poland on Wednesday, called for the inclusion of the 3% target in the Conservatives\u2019 election manifesto, saying: \u201cI want a bigger budget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also called for an overhaul of recruitment, including an end to certain medical requirements and a lifting of the ban on soldiers growing beards, the Daily Mail reported.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Shapps said: \u201cI have coined the phrase \u2018moving from post-war to pre-war\u2019. We have to be much better prepared.<\/p>\n<p>Who cares if somebody has got a beard? Does that really mean you cannot fight?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefence is the best way to protect ourselves against a military conflict \u2013 you have to show your adversaries \u2013 so I am clearly in favour (of a 3% target).
