{"id":11024,"date":"2024-01-29T21:57:50","date_gmt":"2024-01-29T21:57:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/londonpost.news\/?p=11024"},"modified":"2024-01-29T21:57:50","modified_gmt":"2024-01-29T21:57:50","slug":"uks-labour-suspends-mp-for-using-genocide-to-describe-gaza-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brusselsindependent.com\/en\/europe\/uk-news\/uks-labour-suspends-mp-for-using-genocide-to-describe-gaza-war\/2024\/01\/29\/admin1\/","title":{"rendered":"UK\u2019s Labour suspends MP for using \u2018genocide\u2019 to describe Gaza war"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON:<strong>British Labour Party has suspended lawmaker Kate Osamor after she said Israel\u2019s war on Gaza should be remembered as an example of genocide in the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Osamor sent\u00a0a message to her party members on Sunday \u2013 the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day \u2013 listing Gaza among recent examples of genocide.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Tomorrow is Holocaust Memorial Day, an international day to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, the millions of other people murdered under Nazi persecution of other groups and more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and now Gaza.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Labour officials confirmed Osamor had been suspended by opposition chief whip Sir Alan Campbell, \u201cpending an investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Board of Deputies of British Jews condemned \u201cthe attempts by Kate Osamor to link the Holocaust to the current situation in Gaza,\u201d describing her remarks as &#8220;disgraceful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a later post on X, Osamor tweeted an apology &#8220;for any offence caused by my reference to the ongoing humanitarian disaster in Gaza as part of that period of remembrance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said the situation in Gaza is a \u201chumanitarian disaster\u201d rather than \u201cgenocide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe Ms Osamor was perfectly aware of what she was saying and therefore view her apology as utterly hollow,\u201d said the Board of Deputies of British Jews.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON:British Labour Party has suspended lawmaker Kate Osamor after she said Israel\u2019s war on Gaza should be remembered as an example of genocide in the world.
