{"id":11218,"date":"2024-03-01T10:39:32","date_gmt":"2024-03-01T10:39:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/londonpost.news\/?p=11218"},"modified":"2024-03-01T10:39:32","modified_gmt":"2024-03-01T10:39:32","slug":"dozens-die-in-bangladesh-building-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brusselsindependent.com\/en\/asia\/south-asia\/bangladesh\/dozens-die-in-bangladesh-building-fire\/2024\/03\/01\/admin1\/","title":{"rendered":"Dozens die in Bangladesh building fire"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"Article-Item Article-Item-text\">\n<div class=\"Article Article-Paragraph\">\n<div class=\"Paragraph\">\n<p>DHAKA, Bangladesh(REUTERS)-At least 43 people have been killed and others injured after a fire blazed through a seven-storey building in an upscale neighbourhood in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka, health authorities said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So far, 43 people have died from the fire,&#8221; Bangladesh&#8217;s Health Minister Samanta Lal Sen told the AFP news agency early on Friday after visiting the Dhaka Medical College Hospital and an adjoining burn hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-two others are being treated at hospitals with burn wounds, the minister told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>It was not immediately clear what caused the blaze, which was under control after two hours of frantic efforts by 13 firefighting units, the fire service officials said.<\/p>\n<p>But Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence Director, Brigadier General Main Uddin, said the fire could have originated from a gas leak or stove.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a dangerous building with gas cylinders on every floor, even on the staircases,&#8221; he told reporters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Article-Item Article-Item-image width-normal\">\n<figure class=\"Article Article-Figure variant-normal\">\n<div class=\"image\">\n<figure class=\"Picture\"><picture><source type=\"image\/webp\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-i.pr.trt.com.tr\/trtworld\/w664\/h374\/q70\/18246877_0-0-3998-2668.jpeg\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyloadBg\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-i.pr.trt.com.tr\/trtworld\/w664\/h374\/q70\/18246877_0-0-3998-2668.jpeg\" \/><\/picture><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row clearPaddingMargin\">\n<div class=\"row clearPaddingMargin\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-12 col-sm-9\"><strong>Deadly incidents<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Article-Item Article-Item-text\">\n<div class=\"Article Article-Paragraph\">\n<div class=\"Paragraph\">\n<p>Intense scrutiny of Bangladesh and the major international clothing retailers that manufacture in the country has helped prevent further disasters in the garment sector since a fire in 2012 and a building collapse in 2013 together killed more than 1,200 workers.<\/p>\n<p>But in other industries, mainly catering to Bangladesh&#8217;s booming domestic economy and without an equal emphasis on safety, hundreds have died in fires in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Fires are common in densely populated Dhaka, which has experienced a boom in new buildings, often constructed without proper safety measures.
