Thanks to the quirk of Britain&#8217;s first-past-the-post system and a low turnout, Labour&#8217;s triumph was achieved with fewer votes than it secured in 2017 and 2019 &#8211; the latter its worst result for 84 years.<\/div>\n<div class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-14\">The pound and British stocks and government bonds\u00a0<a class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__inherit-color__3208F text__inherit-font__1Y8w3 text__inherit-size__1DZJi link__link__3Ji6W link__underline_default__2prE_\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/uk\/pound-steady-after-labour-set-win-big-uk-election-2024-07-04\/\" data-testid=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rose<\/a>\u00a0marginally on Friday, but Starmer comes to power at a time when the country is facing a series of\u00a0<a class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__inherit-color__3208F text__inherit-font__1Y8w3 text__inherit-size__1DZJi link__link__3Ji6W link__underline_default__2prE_\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/graphics\/BRITAIN-ELECTION\/GRAPHIC\/jnvwaaoeevw\/\" data-testid=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">daunting challenges<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-15\">Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<a class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__inherit-color__3208F text__inherit-font__1Y8w3 text__inherit-size__1DZJi link__link__3Ji6W link__underline_default__2prE_\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/uk\/uk-election-winner-starmer-inherits-weak-economy-with-no-magic-wand-2024-07-05\/\" data-testid=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tax burden<\/a>\u00a0is set to hit its highest since just after World War Two, net debt is almost equivalent to annual economic output, living standards have fallen, and public services are creaking, especially the much cherished National Health Service which has been dogged by strikes.<\/div>\n<div class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-16\">Some of Labour&#8217;s more ambitious plans, such as its flagship green spending pledges, have already been scaled back while Starmer has promised not to raise taxes for &#8220;working people&#8221;.<\/div>\n<div class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-17\">Likewise, he has promised to scrap the Conservative&#8217;s controversial policy of sending asylum seekers to\u00a0<a class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__inherit-color__3208F text__inherit-font__1Y8w3 text__inherit-size__1DZJi link__link__3Ji6W link__underline_default__2prE_\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/uk\/uk-migrant-boat-crossings-hit-19-month-high-adding-pressure-sunak-2024-06-19\/\" data-testid=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rwanda<\/a>, but with migration a key electoral issue, he will be under pressure himself to find a way to stop tens of thousands of people arriving across the Channel from France on small boats.<\/div>\n<div class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-18\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t promise you it will be easy,&#8221; Starmer said earlier at a victory rally. &#8220;Changing a country is not like flicking a switch. It&#8217;s hard work. Patient, determined, work, and we will have to get moving immediately.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-19\">Britain&#8217;s election result showed growth in support for the right-wing Reform party, led by Nigel\u00a0<a class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__inherit-color__3208F text__inherit-font__1Y8w3 text__inherit-size__1DZJi link__link__3Ji6W link__underline_default__2prE_\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/uk\/brexit-campaigner-farage-promises-trouble-after-election-uk-parliament-2024-07-05\/\" data-testid=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Farage<\/a>, echoing recent similar results in Europe where the far right have been surging.<\/div>\n<div class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-20\">But, unlike France where Marine Le Pen&#8217;s National Rally party made historic gains in an election last Sunday, overall the British public has plumped for a centre-left party to bring about change.<\/div>\n<div class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-21\">Starmer has promised to improve relations with the European Union to resolve issues created by Britain&#8217;s split from the bloc. However, despite opposing Brexit, rejoining the EU is not on the table.<\/div>\n<div class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-22\">He may also have to work with Trump if he wins November&#8217;s presidential election. Trump has already sent congratulations to Farage, via his social media platform Truth Social.<\/div>\n<div class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-23\">While he has promised to bring change domestically, Starmer has vowed to continue London&#8217;s unequivocal support for Ukraine in its war against Russia.
