{"id":12995,"date":"2024-08-30T19:33:55","date_gmt":"2024-08-30T18:33:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/londonpost.news\/?p=12995"},"modified":"2024-08-30T19:33:55","modified_gmt":"2024-08-30T18:33:55","slug":"half-the-world-lacks-access-to-safe-drinking-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brusselsindependent.com\/en\/news\/half-the-world-lacks-access-to-safe-drinking-water\/2024\/08\/30\/admin1\/","title":{"rendered":"Half the world lacks access to safe drinking water"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well over half the world&#8217;s population \u2014 4.4 billion people \u2014 cannot access safely managed drinking water, a new study has shown.<\/p>\n<p>4.4 billion people is\u00a0more than double estimates made in by\u00a0The World Health Organization (<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/world-health-organization\/t-38396203\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WHO<\/a>)\u00a0in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>But the report only examined access to clean water in low and middle-income countries,\u00a0meaning the figure would likely be greater once poor access in higher income countries is accounted for.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The information which we have points towards very high rates of contamination,&#8221; said lead researcher Esther Greenwood from ETH Zurich, Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>The new figures come from more sophisticated methods to collect data about water contamination.<\/p>\n<h2>The risks of drinking contaminated water<\/h2>\n<p>Unsafe drinking water has a risk of causing a variety of severe<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/waterborne-diseases\/a-18603328\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">water-borne diseases<\/a>\u00a0like\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/cholera-outbreak-affecting-thousands-in-syria-aid-group\/a-63414354\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cholera<\/a>, dysentery,\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/zimbabwe-street-food-vendors-banned-over-typhoid-cholera-fears\/a-37104481\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">typhoid<\/a>, and less severe diseases like\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/noroviruses-highly-contagious-really-disgusting\/a-40041595\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">norovirus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To be considered &#8220;safely managed&#8221;, water must be available on demand, on premises and contaminant-free, and designed to deliver safe water.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"external-link\" title=\"External link \u2014 The majority of those without access to such services are limited by likely fecal contamination,\" href=\"http:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.adh9578\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The majority of those without access to such services are limited by likely fecal contamination,<\/a>according to the research published in the journal\u00a0<em>Science<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Greenwood&#8217;s study was conducted to plug existing data gaps. Satellite observations and household survey information were analyzed using\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/artificial-intelligence\/t-42133476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">artificial intelligence<\/a>\u00a0to define areas of safe and unsafe water access.<\/p>\n<p>As well as representing more than half the global population, the 4.4 billion people who don&#8217;t have access to safe drinking water accounts for two-thirds of those living in low and middle-income countries.<\/p>\n<p>Greenwood\u00a0says the findings are conservative as the data are samples taken on a single day rather than over extended timescales.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It could actually be that the numbers are even higher,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<h2>South Asia and\u00a0Sub-Saharan Africa most affected<\/h2>\n<p>The analysis considered human and environmental impacts that limited safe water access across the UN&#8217;s 22 geographic subregions.<\/p>\n<p>It predicted 1.2bn people living across India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Iran, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka \u2014 more than half of the\u00a0region&#8217;s population \u2014 were not using safe managed drinking water.<\/p>\n<p>But South Asia fares better than others on a per capita basis.<\/p>\n<p>More than 80% of people living in Sub-Saharan Africa \u2014 a region covering more than 1.1bn people \u2014 cannot access safe managed water.<\/p>\n<p>So too, regions across Oceania (excluding Australia and New Zealand) and Southeast Asia, where around 75% are affected.<\/p>\n<p>About half of these populations may be exposed to contaminated drinking water, according to the study.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well over half the world&#8217;s population \u2014 4.4 billion people \u2014 cannot access safely managed drinking water, a new study has shown. 4.4 billion people is\u00a0more than double estimates made in by\u00a0The World Health Organization (WHO)\u00a0in 2022.
