Iran’s new President prioritizes strengthening ties with Russia

TEHRAN,Iran. August 05/Press TV/ -Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has emphasized that Russia is a “strategic partner” for the Islamic Republic. Strengthening relations with Moscow ranks high on Iran’s foreign policy agenda. Pezeshkian made these remarks during a meeting with Secretary of Russia’s Security Council, Sergei Shoigu, who visited Tehran for talks with Iranian authorities.

Pezeshkian highlighted Russia’s steadfast support during Iran’s challenging times and stressed the need to expedite the implementation of bilateral agreements. He also expressed a belief that the era of unilateralism by certain powers, including the United States, is over. Collaborating with Russia to promote a multipolar world, according to Pezeshkian, will enhance global security and peace.

Shoigu’s visit occurred amidst heightened tensions in the region following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, in Tehran. Iran has vowed to respond to this act of aggression, which it considers a violation of international laws.

Moscow has also condemned Haniyeh’s assassination, emphasizing the dangerous consequences of such actions. During their meeting, Pezeshkian further criticized Israel’s actions in Gaza and its attempts to escalate conflict in the region.

During his visit to Tehran, Russian Secretary of Security Council Sergei Shoigu congratulated President Masoud Pezeshkian on his election and reaffirmed Russia’s view of the Islamic Republic as a key strategic ally in the region. Shoigu expressed satisfaction with joint efforts between Russia and Iran to create a “multipolar world” and enhance regional security. Relations between the two allies continue to grow across various sectors.

Before meeting with Pezeshkian, Shoigu also held discussions with Major General Mohammad Baqeri, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces. Gen. Bagheri described Iran-Russia relations as “strategic and deep-rooted,” emphasizing their commitment to further expanding bilateral ties. He assured that the change of governments would not disrupt the positive trajectory of Tehran-Moscow relations.

Gen. Bagheri also noted that the era of unilateralism is over, and he welcomed tripartite cooperation among Iran, Russia, and China. In response, Shoigu expressed Russia’s keen interest in strengthening all-out cooperation with Iran on regional issues.

Shoigu’s visit was at the invitation of his Iranian counterpart, Ali Akbar Ahmadian, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. The two leaders met earlier in the day to discuss regional developments .
