MOSCOW, Nov 2 – Russia’s Foreign Ministry on Saturday denounced the United States for using “excessive military force” in anti-drug operations in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, calling the actions a violation of U.S. law and international norms, while pledging continued support for Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
“We firmly denounce the use of excessive military force in carrying out actions in anti-drugs operations,” spokesperson Maria Zakharova said in a statement posted on the ministry’s website. “Such actions are in violation of both U.S. domestic legislation and the norms of international law.”
The U.S. campaign has targeted at least 14 vessels, resulting in 61 deaths, according to Washington. The operation involves a significant buildup of fighter jets, warships, and thousands of troops in the region.
Zakharova reaffirmed Moscow’s backing of Maduro, stating, “We confirm our firm support for the Venezuelan leadership in defending its national sovereignty.”
The statement follows a May 2025 strategic partnership agreement signed in Moscow between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Maduro, who has repeatedly accused the U.S. of plotting to oust him.
