{"id":10570,"date":"2023-12-21T18:19:01","date_gmt":"2023-12-21T18:19:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/londonpost.news\/?p=10570"},"modified":"2023-12-21T18:19:01","modified_gmt":"2023-12-21T18:19:01","slug":"macron-may-invite-putin-to-d-day-anniversary-if-ukraine-peace-talks-resume","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brusselsindependent.com\/fr\/diplomatic-world\/macron-may-invite-putin-to-d-day-anniversary-if-ukraine-peace-talks-resume\/2023\/12\/21\/admin1\/","title":{"rendered":"Macron may invite Putin to D-Day anniversary if Ukraine peace talks resume"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PARIS:French President Emmanuel Macron has said he could invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to the 80th anniversary of D-Day in June, if he agrees to resume peace talks with Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with France 5, Macron said he was open to the possibility of inviting Putin \u201cif he holds peace talks and changes the situation\u201d with Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky.<\/p>\n<p>This is a change of tone from Macron, who said last week that the war in Ukraine had made relations with Moscow \u201cvirtually impossible\u201d. He added, however, that he was ready to talk to Putin if he respected international law and Ukrainian sovereignty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t changed my number,\u201d Macron said.<\/p>\n<p>Macron\u2019s remarks came after Putin\u2019s year-end press conference, where he said he had a \u201cquite good working relationship\u201d with Macron, but it soured after Macron broke it off.<\/p>\n<p>Putin said he was interested in mending ties with France, but added: \u201cBut if we are imagining conspiracy theories, maybe Western leaders wanted to have their own chit-chat before having some contact with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also said the truth about the history and the tragedy of the Second World War mattered more than attending the D-Day anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>The war in Ukraine, which started in 2022, has killed over 10,000 people and displaced millions. France has been one of the main weapons suppliers to Ukraine, while Russia has backed the separatists in the east.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10572\" src=\"https:\/\/brusselsindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Putin.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"613\" height=\"377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brusselsindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Putin.jpeg 286w, https:\/\/brusselsindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Putin-150x92.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 613px) 100vw, 613px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Several attempts at peace have failed, as the US and the UK have opposed negotiations or a ceasefire. Russia has demanded that Ukraine drop its NATO aspirations and not host foreign military bases.<\/p>\n<p>However, recent developments have shifted the dynamics of the conflict. Western support for Ukraine has weakened, as the US has run low on aid and Ukraine has lost ground to the rebels. Europe\u2019s resources have also been drained, with no clear exit strategy.
