NEW DELHI:A new design for the Admirals\u2019 Epaulettes, a shoulder ornament that indicates an officer\u2019s rank, was revealed by the Indian Navy.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared on Navy Day, December 4, that the new epaulets would \u201chonour the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Indian Navy has two, three, and four-star ranks for admirals. The highest rank of admiral is preceded by vice admiral.<\/p>\n

The Admiral Epaulet consists of four components \u2013 a golden Navy button, an octagon, a sword and a telescope.<\/p>\n

The navy\u2019s resolve to \u201cshed the mentality of servitude\u201d is reflected by the gold navy buttons.<\/p>\n

The previous gold shoulder board is replaced by the gold button, which bears the new naval ensign.<\/p>\n

The octagonal shape (now red), derived from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj\u2019s Rajmudra, is a vital part of the design. It is located under the gold button on the epaulet.<\/p>\n

The new design, with the red Rajmudra (royal seal), signifies the \u201ceight-cardinal directions to denote a comprehensive long-term vision.\u201d<\/p>\n

The octagon has the words \u201cSatyamev Jayate,\u201d which means \u201cTruth only Prevails,\u201d engraved on it.<\/p>\n

The \u201ccutting edge of national power and winning wars through supremacy, vanquishing foes and surmounting every obstacle\u201d is represented by an Indian sword under the Rajmudra.<\/p>\n

The new epaulet has a cross made of the telescope and the Indian sword, with the telescope replacing the baton.<\/p>\n

The Indian Navy changed its ensign last year and swapped the red Saint George\u2019s Cross with a blue octagon that has the national emblem over an anchor.<\/p>\n

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the Maratha Empire\u2019s founder in western India, pioneered the importance of a strong navy.<\/p>\n

He built many coastal forts along the Konkan coast, such as Vijaydurg and Sindhudurg, as per the Navy.<\/p>\n
