The conservatives (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleanenergywire.org\/experts\/cdu-christian-democratic-union\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDU<\/a>) under Friedrich Merz, who looks likely to become the country\u2019s next chancellor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wahlrecht.de\/umfragen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to current polls<\/a>, adopted an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdu.de\/aktuelles\/funktionierender-staat\/cdu-beschliesst-agenda-2030\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agenda 2030<\/a>\u201d that promises to reduce the price of electricity by \u201cat least\u201d five cents per kilowatt-hour, by lowering taxes and reducing\u00a0<a class=\"lexicon-term\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cleanenergywire.org\/glossary\/letter_g#grid_fees\" data-title=\"(Netzentgelte) Power suppliers must pay grid operators a \u2019grid fee\u2018 for the use of their network. This fee is ultimately passed on to the consumer. The fee covers infrastructure costs, invoicing, and metering, and includes various surcharges. Grid fee also covers the costs of operating the grid ...\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grid fees<\/a>. Chancellor Olaf Scholz\u2019s Social Democrats (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleanenergywire.org\/experts\/spd-social-democratic-party\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SPD<\/a>) also officially adopted their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleanenergywire.org\/news\/german-parties-energy-and-climate-policy-positions-2025-general-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-title=\"Vote25 \u2013 German parties\u2019 energy and climate policy positions for the 2025 election\">party manifesto<\/a>, which focuses on increasing investments and social justice, and proposes to halve\u00a0<a class=\"lexicon-term\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cleanenergywire.org\/glossary\/letter_g#grid_fees\" data-title=\"(Netzentgelte) Power suppliers must pay grid operators a \u2019grid fee\u2018 for the use of their network. Grid fee also covers the costs of operating the grid ...\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grid fees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lower energy prices, as well as tax cuts worth billions, are part of the CDU\u2019s plan to boost economic growth to \u201cat least two percent\u201d. The paper also calls for abolishing the EU 2035 phase-out date for combustion engines, and argues that synthetic fuels will enable these engines \u201cto contribute to achieving climate targets\u201d.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleanenergywire.org\/experts\/cdu-christian-democratic-union\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDU<\/a>\u00a0member Christoph Ahlhaus, who chairs the country\u2019s association of small and medium-sized enterprises, told public broadcaster ARD that unresolved financing of the party concept was \u201cindeed the weak point\u201d, reported newsletter Tagesspiegel Background.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleanenergywire.org\/experts\/cdu-christian-democratic-union\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDU<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleanenergywire.org\/experts\/spd-social-democratic-party\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SPD<\/a>, the populist far-right Alternative f\u00fcr Deutschland (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleanenergywire.org\/experts\/afd-alternative-germany\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AfD<\/a>), as well as the B\u00fcndnis Sarah Wagenknecht (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleanenergywire.org\/experts\/bsw-sahra-wagenknecht-alliance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BSW<\/a>), a populist left anti-immigrant outfit, also detailed or added to their election promises.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleanenergywire.org\/experts\/afd-alternative-germany\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AfD<\/a>\u00a0leader Alice Weidel said the party wanted to tear down all of Germany\u2019s wind turbines. Meanwhile, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleanenergywire.org\/experts\/bsw-sahra-wagenknecht-alliance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BSW<\/a>\u00a0plans to resume large-scale gas imports from Russia.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wahlrecht.de\/umfragen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the latest polls<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleanenergywire.org\/experts\/cdu-christian-democratic-union\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDU<\/a>\u00a0can expect to receive around 30 percent of the vote at the 23 February elections.
