Credit: Wikimedia Commons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>TOKYO (INPS Japan)<\/strong> \u2013 The screening room at the Toda Peace Memorial Hall in Tokyo fell silent as Kazakh filmmaker and human rights advocate <a href=\"https:\/\/aigerimseitenova.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aigerim Seitenova<\/a> stepped forward in a black T-shirt and green skirt to introduce her 31-minute documentary, <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/aigerimseitenova.com\/jara_radioactivepatriarchy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cJara \u2013 Radioactive Patriarchy: Women of Qazaqstan.\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/em>\u3000The screening event was co-organized by the Kazakh Nuclear Frontline Coalition (ASQAQQNFC), the Soka Gakkai Peace Committee, and Peace Boat, with support from <a href=\"https:\/\/nuclearabolitionjpn.com\/english\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Japan NGO Network for Nuclear Weapons Abolition (JANA).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The hall itself is symbolic in Japan\u2019s peace movement. It is named after<a href=\"https:\/\/www.joseitoda.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Josei Toda<\/a>, the second president of the Buddhist organisation Soka Gakkai, who in 1957 made his historic<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sokaglobal.org\/resources\/study-materials\/commemorative-dates\/september-8-declaration-calling-for-the-abolition-of-nuclear-weapons.html#:~:text=The%20second%20president%20of%20the,Yokohama%20on%20September%208%2C%201957.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <em>Declaration Calling for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons<\/em><\/a> before 50,000 youth members. They are not victims\u2014they are storytellers and changemakers,\u201d Seitenova told the audience of diplomats, journalists, students and peace activists.<\/p>\n<p>Her documentary, <em>Jara<\/em>\u2014meaning \u201cwound\u201d in Kazakh\u2014tells the stories of women from Semey, formerly known as Semipalatinsk, the site of 456 Soviet nuclear tests conducted between 1949 and 1989.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike earlier films that focused on physical devastation and disability caused by nuclear testing, <em>Jara<\/em> explores the unseen and intergenerational impacts: the stigma, the psychological scars, and the inherited fear of bearing children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost films show Semey as \u2018the most nuked place on Earth.\u2019 I wanted to show resilience instead of fear\u2014to reclaim our story in our own voice,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"JARA - Radioactive Patriarchy: Women of Qazaqstan. It lives on in prejudice and silence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That experience would later drive her to create a film that breaks that silence.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Patriarchy and Nuclear Power<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>In <em>Jara<\/em>, women appear not as passive victims but as active participants in their communities, confronting the legacies of secrecy and discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn militarised societies, nuclear weapons are symbols of superiority,\u201d Seitenova said in her speech. \u201cPeace and cooperation are dismissed as weak\u2014 as feminine. That\u2019s the mindset we must challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her feminist perspective connects nuclear weapons and patriarchy, arguing that both systems thrive on domination and power over others.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From the Steppes to Global Advocacy<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Born into a third-generation family affected by radiation exposure in Semey, Seitenova said her activism was inspired by \u201cquiet endurance and the absence of open discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, she joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/youthgroup.ctbto.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Youth for CTBTO<\/a> and Group of Eminent Persons (GEM) \u2018Youth International Conference\u2019 organised by the Kazakh government.
