Brussels Launches EU T20 Belgium League, Marking Historic Debut for European Cricket

BRUSSELS, Oct 22(Saadia Ajbaili) — In a landmark moment for European sports, Brussels hosted the inaugural ceremony of the EU T20 Belgium League on October 17, a groundbreaking initiative spearheaded by EU T20 Belgium in partnership with the Belgium Cricket Federation. This event signals Belgium’s bold entry onto the global cricket stage, as the nation prepares to host its first-ever international T20 tournament in May-June 2026. The league, featuring six elite teams blending international stars and local talent, aims to establish Belgium as a vibrant hub for cricket in Europe, heralding a new era for the sport on the continent.

The ceremony, held in the heart of Brussels, unveiled the league’s ambitious vision and structure. Each of the six dynamic teams will comprise a mix of talent: four current international players, six global superstars, four associate-level players, and four Belgian cricket heroes. A preparatory tournament will precede the main event, laying the groundwork for the highly anticipated competition. The league is backed by a robust organizational framework, with Destino Legends Sports LLC as the owner, Cricket Belgium as the licensing authority, and the International Cricket Council (ICC) as the sanctioning body.

A Vision for Global and Inclusive Growth

Mr. Robin Chaudhary, Managing Partner of Destino Legends Sports LLC, set the tone with a stirring address: “Our goal is clear: to build a sustainable, competitive, and truly global cricket league. We are not just introducing cricket to Europe; we are forging a future where every boundary creates new opportunities. Welcome to the EU T20 League.” His words captured the event’s spirit of unity and ambition, resonating with attendees under Brussels’ shimmering lights.

The league also prioritizes inclusivity, with a strong commitment to advancing women’s cricket in Belgium. Plans are underway to enhance participation and visibility for female players, ensuring the sport’s growth is progressive and far-reaching. This aligns with Belgium’s unique position as a multilingual, diverse nation with a growing South Asian community, making it an ideal catalyst for cricket’s expansion across Europe.

Cricket’s Global Surge

With a worldwide audience of 2.5 billion, cricket ranks as the second most popular sport after football. The Indian Premier League (IPL) exemplifies its commercial might, with its brand value soaring from $10.7 billion in 2023 to $16 billion in 2024, a testament to the sport’s cultural and economic impact. Belgium’s foray into T20 cricket taps into this global momentum, positioning the country as a rising player in the sport’s international landscape.

Leadership and Endorsements The initiative’s success stems from the visionary leadership of Mr. Umair Butt, Chairman of the Belgium Cricket Federation; Mr. Robin Chaudhary; and Ms. Vedika Thakur, Founding Partner of Destino Legends Sports LLC. Their efforts were bolstered by Eoin Morgan, 2019 World Cup-winning captain and brand ambassador for Destino Legends, alongside Mr. Shashidhar Gunna. Morgan praised the federation’s dedication: “This tournament, six years in the making, reflects a long-term strategy for sustainable growth. The enthusiasm here is palpable, and Belgium’s Cricket Federation is leading the charge.”

Ms. Thakur highlighted Brussels’ symbolic role: “Launching this league in a city that embodies unity and diversity is profoundly meaningful. Just as Brussels bridges nations, our league will unite millions through a shared passion for cricket, turning dreams into reality.”

Spotlight on Local Talent

The event also showcased Belgium’s emerging cricket stars, including Hamza Munir (20) and Mohammad Qasem Sabir (18), who expressed enthusiasm for the opportunities ahead. “This league will take Belgian cricket to new heights,” said Hamza. Qasem added, “It’s not just about players; it’s about recognition for our federation and building a future for the sport here.” Their optimism reflects the league’s potential to nurture local talent while offering them a global platform to compete alongside international icons.

A Night of Unity and Celebration

The ceremony concluded with vibrant networking, culinary delights, and spirited discussions, all set against Brussels’ dazzling backdrop. The atmosphere buzzed with optimism, as attendees—ranging from cricket enthusiasts to federation officials—embraced a unified message: the next great chapter of global cricket is unfolding, and it begins in the heart of Europe.

This historic launch not only marks Belgium’s ascent in international cricket but also underscores the sport’s power to bridge cultures and inspire communities, setting the stage for a transformative tournament in 2026.
