EU urged to take responsibility for its own security

STRASBOURG, March 12(Imran Saqib/Correspondent) The European Parliament is set to adopt a resolution on the white paper regarding the future of European defence while reaffirming the EU’s steadfast support for Ukraine. The Greens/EFA Group has expressed its approval of initiatives like ReArm Europe but emphasized the need for closer cooperation among EU member states on security and defence matters. The group has called for a unified approach, including pooled defence budgets and joint procurement, to enhance support for Ukraine and strengthen Europe’s conventional defence capabilities.

Reinier van Lanschot, Volt MEP and shadow rapporteur for the white paper in the Greens/EFA Group, commented:

“The demand for urgent defence investments is critical. The EU must demonstrate leadership and take responsibility for ensuring its freedom and security. Security extends beyond weapons and ammunition—it also encompasses cybersecurity, energy independence, and investments in European infrastructure, especially to facilitate military transport.

“It is encouraging to finally see concrete proposals. However, two crucial aspects must be considered: the European Parliament, as the EU’s sole directly elected institution, cannot be excluded from these decisions. Additionally, we must focus on European investments. Relying on 27 uncoordinated efforts will not yield security. A unified approach—joint procurement and investment in European strategic enablers—is essential.”

Villy Søvndal, Greens/EFA MEP and shadow rapporteur on the resolution supporting Ukraine, also highlighted the importance of continued backing for Ukraine amid ongoing geopolitical tensions:

“We are witnessing a fractured global landscape, where autocrats are striving to undermine democratic systems. It is vital to maintain pressure on Russia, as Ukraine stands as Europe’s frontline in defending freedom and sovereignty. More than ever, we must stand resolutely by Ukraine in its fight for independence and self-determination.”
