“ICC investigates reports of extra judicial killings and rape in Sudan crisis”

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has initiated an investigation into allegations of extrajudicial killings, sexual violence, and other crimes committed amid Sudan’s ongoing internal conflict. Karim Khan, the ICC’s top prosecutor, emphasized during a briefing to the UN Security Council that the situation in Darfur is dangerously reminiscent of past atrocities, urging action to prevent further suffering.

Khan stated, “We are not on the verge of a human rights catastrophe, we are already in the midst of one.” The ICC will examine incidents such as extrajudicial killings, the destruction of homes and markets, looting, and the killing and displacement of civilians in various locations across Darfur, including el-Geneina and North Darfur, as outlined in a report from the prosecutor’s office.

Additionally, the investigation will include allegations of sexual and gender-based crimes, including mass rapes and violence against children. The ICC’s intervention aims to shed light on these disturbing reports and hold accountable those responsible for the crimes committed during the Sudan conflict.
