Ghana Bans Foreigners from Local Gold Trade in Sweeping Reforms

ACCRA, Ghana.April 14 – Ghana has announced a ban on all foreign participation in its domestic gold market, effective May 1, 2025, as part of drastic reforms to stabilize its economy and reclaim control over the lucrative sector.

The move, announced by the newly established Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), mandates foreign traders to exit the market by April 30, though they may still apply to purchase gold directly from the state body.

Crackdown on Illegal Mining & Foreign Influence
The decision follows years of rampant illegal mining (galamsey), environmental degradation, and revenue losses linked to foreign operators—particularly Chinese nationals—who dominate the informal gold trade.

Ghana, Africa’s top gold producer, relies on small-scale miners for over a third of its gold output, but smuggling and illicit foreign involvement have plagued the sector.

“This sends a strong message to foreign actors—especially Chinese operatives—who have circumvented local laws for years,” said Nana Asante Krobea, a mining governance consultant.

A New Era for Ghana’s Gold?
The GoldBod will now regulate artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM), a sector supporting over a million livelihoods, while curbing illegal exports and environmental harm.

Analysts see this as President John Mahama’s first major step to fulfill campaign promises against galamsey. If enforced strictly, the policy could boost state revenue and bring order to the multi-billion-dollar ASM sector.
