TEHRAN: Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Nasser Kanaani, has refuted a joint statement from the United States and three European nations regarding Iran’s nuclear program, asserting that Tehran’s nuclear activities are in line with international norms.
On Friday, Kanaani criticized comments made by Britain, France, Germany, and the US about Iran’s nuclear program, stating that Iran’s activities are “completely peaceful.”
Western countries criticized Iran on Thursday for the “escalation” of its nuclear program, following a report by the UN watchdog that Tehran had increased its enrichment of high-grade uranium.
Kanaani reiterated, “The nuclear program of the Islamic Republic of Iran has always been and will continue to be peaceful.”
The spokesperson found it ironic that the countries responsible for the current state of Iran’s nuclear program are trying to deflect blame and portray themselves as victims.
He emphasized that Tehran’s nuclear activities adhere to international norms, noting that the enrichment of uranium up to 60% is a standard procedure at Iranian nuclear facilities.
Kanaani suggested that these countries should reflect on their actions over the past two years in negotiations to lift sanctions and consider the results of their unproductive policies.
Highlighting Iran’s stance, the spokesperson stated, “Enrichment at the 60% level in Iran’s nuclear facilities has consistently been in proportion to the country’s peaceful needs and under the full supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).”
Kanaani assured that Iran is fully cognizant of all its international rights and obligations and will continue its cooperation with the agency within this framework.
Expanding on the diplomatic discourse, Kanaani added that avoiding negotiations and bringing up unrelated issues, which have led to the current state of negotiations, do not give the United States and three European countries the right to make assertions about Iran’s nuclear program.
The Foreign Ministry spokesperson concluded by stating, “As in the past, the Islamic Republic of Iran views negotiation and diplomacy as the most effective means to address unfounded concerns about its peaceful nuclear program. The onus now lies with the United States and the three European countries. They must make the necessary political decisions, moving beyond rhetorical statements and unproductive pressures.”
