Heavy November snowfall in Seoul breaks records and disrupts daily life

SEOUL, Nov 28(ALJEEZRA/Correspondent LP): Seoul has experienced its heaviest November snowfall since records began in 1907. The South Korean capital was blanketed with at least 16 cm of snow on Wednesday, surpassing the previous record of 12.4 cm set in November 1972.

The heavy snowfall led to significant disruptions across the country. Local media reported grounded flights, closed roads, and delays in transport services. At least one person is reported to have died in a weather-related traffic accident near Seoul.

Youn Ki-han, the head of Seoul’s Meteorology Forecast Division, attributed the heavy snowfall to strong westerly winds and a “significant temperature difference between the sea surface and the cold air”. The snowfall is expected to continue through Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

This cold weather follows a period of mild autumn temperatures. Businessman Bae Joo-han remarked, “Just last week, I felt that the November autumn was a bit warm, but in just one week it feels like it’s turned into a winter wonderland, which was quite a contrast. So I came out onto the streets today to enjoy the first snowfall of this winter.”
