BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) — President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva said on Saturday that Brazil’s democracy was under threat following the Jan. 8 riots by far-right protesters in the capital. He dismissed the Brazilian army chief, citing concerns.
The official website of the Brazilian military said General Julio Cesar de Arruda was dismissed from his post as army chief. He was replaced by a general. Tomás Miguel Ribeiro Paiva, who was the commander of the Southeast Army Headquarters.
In recent weeks, Lula’s forces came under attack after supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro stormed government buildings and destroyed public property.
